The country of Niue is a Polynesian island country located in the South Pacific Ocean. Niue is only about 1,600 square kilometers in size, making it one of the smallest countries in the world. The population of Niue is around 11,000 people, making it the second smallest population size in Oceania after Papua New Guinea.Niue is an independent country and does not have any formal ties to any other nation. The country's only connection to other nations is through international treaties which govern issues such as maritime boundaries and shared defense interests.Niue is a member of the United Nations and has been since 2006. The country also participates in numerous other organizations, including the Commonwealth and the Pacific Islands Forum.Niue's economy is based largely on subsistence agriculture and tourism. The main exports are copra, scrap metal, fish, and chicken. Tourism is a major source of income for the country, with visitors coming principally from New Zealand, Australia, and Japan.
