Ghana is a country located in west Africa. Named after the ancient Ghana Empire, it became a British colony in 1883. It gained independence from Britain in 1957 and has been a republic since 1992. The capital is Accra. Ghana is sparsely populated and has a largely rural economy. Agriculture is the largest economic activity, followed by manufacturing. The official language of Ghana is English, but local languages are also spoken.
