Guyana is a country in South America. It is bordered by the Guiana Highlands to the north and west, Venezuela to the south and east, and Brazil to the southeast. The country covers an area of approximately 60,000 km² and has a population of approximately 1.3 million people.nGuyana is made up of two regions: the highlands to the north and west, which are almost completely covered with dense rainforest, and the lowlands to the south and east, which are mostly Savannah (grassland). The capital city is Georgetown. Guyana became independent from British rule on 26 May 1966. The country's official language is English, but there are also French and Portuguese languages spoken.nGuyana is a member state of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the Organization of American States (OAS).
