Small South American country, Suriname located on the periphery of South America. Suriname has a population of just under half a million people, most of whom reside on the mainland and in the interior lakes region. The capital and largest city is Paramaribo. The judiciary is independent and subject to judicial review. The judiciary is composed of three branches: the Supreme Court, the Superior Court, and the Magistrate's Court. There are also a number of special courts that handle different types of cases.
