Macau is an autonomous region of China. It is located on the southeastern coast of the island of Macau, between Guangdong and Shenzhen provinces. The territory was originally leased from Portugal in 1557, and became a Portuguese protectorate in 1640. In 1999, Macau regained its status as an autonomous region of China. 3
